Summer Learning Success
After two years of virtual programming, high school LINK Scholars enthusiastically returned to our six-week Summer Learning program in person at Dunbar Vocational Career Academy in Bronzeville. 100 newly accepted rising freshmen joined their rising sophomore and junior peers at our signature intensive focused on math, English/Language Arts, leadership development, test preparation, and more. Scholars participated in their choice of 16 electives connected to career paths or passions as they tapped into their creative, entrepreneurial, and rhetorical interests to balance out the rigorous academic components.
An abbreviated version of the program, spanning four weeks, was offered to our middle school Junior LINK Scholars. Students in both programs also had the opportunity to join in field trips that included going to Bears Training Camp, college visits, and a trampoline park. The summer culminated in a “Summer Learning Showcase” where Scholars performed and presented final projects from their elective selection in front of their families, Mentors, and LINK staff.
Summer Learning is a chance to learn your way, without penalty. Throughout Summer Learning I learned to tackle test questions in different ways and different comprehension tactics, and being able to collaborate in my elective with peers that look like me makes the experience worthwhile.
