Scholars & Parents: In Case You Missed It

We’ve been very busy these last three months with many opportunities to connect with and make an impact in the lives of our brilliant Scholars and families. Here are a few highlights:

We kicked off our October Saturday Academy with a lesson on “fit factors”— aspects such as location, campus life, affordability, academic opportunities, etc. that Scholars can use to determine whether a college might be the right fit for them. Through that lesson, Scholars identified their personal fit factors and crafted questions to ask during the college rep panel, which included Black admissions representatives from George Washington University, Howard University, Kenyon College, and Rice University.

Scholars also met their Saturday Academy Facilitators and learned about their cohort namesakes. Each Facilitator selected a Black social justice leader to serve as the namesake for their cohort, highlighting incredible leaders such as Katherine Johnson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ida B. Wells, Bell Hooks, and Trevor Noah.

Scholars and their parents came out on October 10 to learn more about Duke University, including campus life, admissions requirements, and how to best position themselves as strong applicants. Scholars were also able to learn more about Duke’s approach to admissions in light of the recent SCOTUS decision regarding affirmative action at this LINK-only event. Scholars asked amazing questions to learn more about what to expect as a student at Duke—and a few plan to apply!

On November 2, we launched our new Group Mentor initiative and hosted a Match Night to connect 45 Scholars with their new Mentors!

“It was wonderful!” said Veraleka Mitchell, parent of a Class of 2025 scholar. “So glad to see this mentoring taking place.”

Mentors and mentees were able to learn more about each other through a variety of fun activities as well as make plans to connect again soon to continue building their budding relationships.
