Alumni Spotlight: Steven Hunter, Class of 1998
We’re so proud to shine the alumni spotlight on Steven Hunter, Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director at McDonald’s Corporation, current LINK mentor, and LINK alum from the Class of 1998.
“Throughout my high school years, LINK provided me with an incredible foundation to enhance my academic growth and personal development,” Steven says. “The time in summer school was grueling, but it always prepared me for the year ahead. The LINK leadership of the time (Bob Anderson, Julie Welborn) were nurturing supporters and instilled a belief in me and others that we could accomplish all things we put our minds to. The friends I made while in LINK were meaningful both then and now. The best gift LINK provided me with was my mentor, Tracy Carmen-Jones. Since my freshman year, Tracy’s mentorship, sage advice, guidance, friendship, and love have been a steady presence in my life. Today, she and I are as tight as ever and have a ball when we connect; I couldn’t imagine life without her. Thank you, LINK!”
Steven is the third of four generations of LINK. Tracy Carmen-Jones, his LINK mentor, was mentored by her LINK sponsor, Adrienne Bailey; and now Steven is maintaining that strong tradition of giving back by serving as a LINK mentor to Yasir Taylor!
Steven recently enjoyed the honor and privilege of returning to his alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (BS, BA ’03), to serve as a guest speaker for a discussion with the MBA 597 Program Foundations class. He presented two lectures focused on teamwork, leveraging MBA studies to achieve business success, and tapping the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the learning experience. Congratulations, Steven!
