Women’s History Month: A Word from Dr. J
In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, Dr. Janine Franklin (affectionately known as Dr. J.), LINK’s VP, Programs & Evaluation, shared some thoughts on inspiring women in her life as well as her work and legacy at LINK.
Q: Who has been the most inspiring woman in your life?
Dr. J: There are too many women in my life who have inspired me personally and professionally to name just one. What I will say is that the collective impact of women—from my grandmother, whose superpower is being a truth teller, to former colleagues and managers who have eloquently navigated leadership and championed equity as Black women despite obstacles—all have contributed to the leader and, most importantly, the woman that I am today. Whether it is advocating for equity, speaking truth to power, or centering the experiences of those I serve, I have the privilege of being surrounded by women who not only support me but also truly believe in me.
Q: What motivates you in your work at LINK on a daily basis?
Dr. J: I am someone who believes that every Black child has a set of innate skills and genius that is waiting to be cultivated and have space to be explored. That’s what brings me to LINK every day. To know the students we serve are not only on their trajectory to college and, subsequently, a thriving career but are also the next decision-makers and leaders for our dear city motivates me to be diligent in my advocacy for resources and opportunities to support their journey to success.
Q: How would you like history to remember your impact at LINK?
Dr. J: My hope is that my legacy at LINK resides in the success of our Scholars and Alumni. For our Black Scholars and future leaders to not only graduate from college but to do so while encompassing the pride and joy of being Black and making an impact in their communities and the greater Chicagoland area would be my greatest joy.
Thank you, Dr. J, for your commitment to making an impact at LINK—and for the example you set as an educated Black woman in leadership!
