Mentorship Magic: Susan and Niyah’s Bond

LINK Newsletter, Mentors

We struck gold in the Mentor-Scholar pairing between Saniyah (Niyah) Freeman, a determined Marist High School student, and her Mentor, Susan Hackney, a licensed clinical social worker. The two quickly established a strong connection just weeks after being matched, and they’re on their way to an intimate bond that will be life-changing for them both.

In a recent Zoom interview, here’s what they each had to say about their Mentor/Mentee relationship:

Susan: As a licensed clinical social worker, I like to use my social work skills of listening and reflecting to act as a sounding board and supportive presence. I initially heard about LINK from my brother, who has been involved on the board for many years. After meeting some of his Mentees, who are really special young people, I was inspired to become a Mentor myself. I’m already enjoying the experience, and I look forward to keeping in touch with Niyah. She is a  delight, very sweet and fun, and so driven. I anticipate maintaining a long-term supportive relationship with her.

Niyah: I am currently focused on pursuing a major in kinesiology with the ultimate goal of studying physical therapy. LINK has been a big part of my education and personal development as a program for students who are looking to better themselves and grow their confidence. Through LINK, I was nominated for the Posse Scholarship, and I also won a study abroad scholarship through LINK. I’m excited to share this process with my Mentor, Susan. She is a great source of motivation and positivity, and she’s really helpful in keeping me on track. We were just matched a few weeks ago, but we’re quickly growing close.

Niyah and Susan have already met in person multiple times, including attending a White Sox game at a LINK-sponsored event. Both are excited to navigate the college process together, with Susan aiming to help Niyah weigh her pros and cons of college acceptances, and Niyah seeking positivity and motivation from her Mentor to help combat the expected stress during senior year.

Niyah, we’re so excited to see what the future holds for you — and Susan, thank you for investing in Niyah’s success!
